How Did the Universe Begin?
What I find amazing about the Big Bang theory for the creation of the universe is that something of infinite density was the cause. I suppose that with a massive event where all energy was manipulated (effect), by a more powerful and intelligent entity (cause), this event might make some noise if you were around. But they say that outer space is a void, so it's doubtful there was a bang at all. However, based upon our current understanding of physics, to assume that this event occurred by chance just doesn't make any logical sense to me, unless you want to ignore the science. So, let's explore the creation story as it is written in Genesis and other historical documents, and contrast that with what we know scientifically about our universe.
Biblically speaking, sometime after the war in heaven, God decided to create the universe and our planet for His companion - man - who He was going to make in His own image. To describe this creation event, the word used for "created" in the Latin translation of the original text was "nihilo", which means out of nothing. So, what is being inferred here is that God (or the intelligent cause) created everything out of nothing. That would include everything in the universe together with its controlling properties such as gravity, which is, that's right, made up of atoms as well.
Since the controlling properties that govern the universe are made up of atoms, and each are required to be in a certain order for it to function in the first place, then the logical conclusion would point to God exuding the energy (cause), in a preconceived arrangement (Intelligent Design), to create the heavenly bodies and the controlling properties at the same time, in place, from the subatomic level. An explosion or ‘big bang’ would not render the order or the controlling properties we can observe in the universe, nor does that explain where the energy came from.
Edwin Powell Hubble, an American astronomer who played a crucial role in establishing the field of extragalactic astronomy and is generally regarded as one of the most important observational cosmologists of the 20th century, was responsible for suggesting an expanding universe in his famous Hubble Law. This law is being used to suggest a "Big Bang" beginning. However, in his later writings, he said that what became known as the Hubble Law of the expanding universe due to a so-called Big Bang "could also be due to some hitherto unknown principle of nature”. That’s right Edwin, there is another principle at work.
Einstein’s Steady State Model is a recently uncovered work that was published in 1931 was reminiscent of a theory put forth by 1940’s British astrophysicist Fred Hoyle that space could be expanding eternally and keeping a roughly constant density. It could do this by continually adding new matter, with elementary particles spontaneously popping up from space. This theory seems consistent with scientists who believe that the death and birth of new stars ensure that the universe maintains its density. More about this in the next section.
What's more, given the aforementioned creation scenario, the speed of light could only be used to measure the distance between the earth and a fixed point in the universe and not to calculate age. Most physicist and cosmologists today are Atheists and refuse to acknowledge Intelligent Design or universe created by God. In order to maintain the ‘big bang’ theory, and to justify a universe that is billions of years old, and created without an intelligent cause, cosmologists must conclude that an ‘event’ occurred at a distant point in the universe and use the speed of light to calculate age rather than distance. The idea of an actual explosion has been refuted and they say that all of space was filled with dense energy that is now expanding. My question is, where did the energy come from?
Even if the ‘big bang’ theory made any logical sense, the age calculation would be off because the speed of light is slowing down, and the universe stretches. Headlines were made in several newspapers around the world after a paper was published in Nature by a team of scientists, which included the famous physicist Paul Davies, who claim that light been slowing down since the "creation of the universe".[1] What's more, scientists have postulated that the universe stretched from a dense tiny volume, providing another variable impacting the age equation. What could that "unknown principle of nature" be? A Designer? A Creator? God? I suppose the label you choose will depend on the lens your worldview is perceived through – Atheism or Theism. Which makes more sense to you?
It’s interesting to note here that this stretching, now called cosmological expansion, happens to be mentioned 15 times in the Bible. One example is found in Job 26:7, where it says that "God stretches out the north over empty space; He hangs the earth on nothing." Other Biblical references state that God sits on the circle of the earth and stretches the heavens. Another says that God "bowed" the heavens, which by the way sounds allot like what Einstein discovered about the universe. Could it be that Hubble's "unknown principle of nature" is in fact God?
Fine Tuned to Work Together
To further support the premise of an Intelligent Design is the way that the universe has been precisely fine-tuned which seems to support the steady state model. Cosmologist Sean Carroll comments in a New York Times article that appeared in 2007 saying, "A law of physics is a pattern that nature obeys without exception." Why is this the case? Dinesh D'Souza in a debate with Daniel Dennett at Tufts University in 2007 makes some interesting points to consider as to why the universe is so constant.[2]
There are 4 values or forces in the universe that provide this balance:
Weak Nuclear Force that allows neutrons to turn into protons, giving off radiation in the process. The presence of these particles can be measured by a device known as a Geiger Counter.
Strong Nuclear Forces that hold the nucleus of an atom together, binding the subatomic particles called protons and neutrons together. Forcing these particles apart causes an explosion.
Gravity, which is a natural force that tends to cause physical things to move towards each other.
,Electromagnetism which is a magnetic field that is produced by a current of electricity.
Einstein’s Theory of Relativity which explained how large things like galaxies operate, and Quantum Mechanics which explains how small things like atoms operate, are united by Superstring Theory which offers a single explanation for how the universe is so elegantly balanced. Click on the video link below [3] to learn more.
Superstring Theory holds that rather than a multitude of tiny particles, string theory proclaims that all forces and all mater in the universe are made up of one single ingredient - tiny vibrating strands of energy known as strings. These strings are so small that we can’t ever hope to see them. Strings can wiggle or vibrate in several different ways or frequencies. Like different sized tuning forks that are used to tune a piano.
This fine-tuned balance of the universe can also be observed with the birth and death of stars. Stars form inside relatively dense concentrations of interstellar gas and dust known as molecular clouds. This is called the star formation rate. Stars burn up their gasses and literally condense into themselves creating heat and then explode releasing material and this shockwave can form other stars. This explosion is called a supernova. What is left after this happens is called a black hole. The gravitational force left behind in these black holes is so strong that it won’t let light out.
According to an NASA article titled Milky Way Churns Out Seven New Stars Per Year, Scientists Say by mapping patches of radioactive aluminum, we get on average about seven new stars per year, and one star dying each year as a planetary nebula in the Milky Way. They say that the rates are different in different types of galaxies, but this is roughly the average over all galaxies in the Universe. This average is consistent with the energy mass balance in engineering. Again, this fine tuning in the universe could not have come from chance. What also is striking to me is that the universe seems to be self-healing like a single cell in our bodies. More about this correlation later.
Our reality exists in 4 dimensions: spatially (height, width, depth) and time. Another way of perceiving this is with latitude, longitude, and elevation to find your location. According to the theoretical framework of Superstring Theory, theoretical physicists can mathematically prove that there are at least 10 different space-time dimensions. Bosonic String Theories estimates 26 space-time dimensions. So, when Lucifer and 1/3 of the angels were cast from heaven, where did they go? Perhaps into one of the other dimensions uncovered in the framework of Superstring Theory.
To further support my theory of creation in place, I continue to look at what science has revealed. The picture below shows our Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) or also known as the Sun's magnetic field.
The Sun's magnetic field goes beyond all the planets that’s why it’s also name Interplanetary Magnetic Field because it encompasses all the planets within it. You must have gravity at the same time you have planets, and it starts with the sun. This seems to point to and support the idea that our spatial dimension and time were created simultaneously by an enormous release of energy in an ordered manner.
Many Christians disagree with how old the earth and universe are. In Genesis 1:1 it says that “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” What exactly did God create when it says “heavens” and “earth”? The Hebrew word used for heavens, shamayim, can mean visible universe including stars and planets. The Hebrew word for earth, 'erets, can simply mean world or simply ground. The word ground makes sense to me considering verse 2 that says it was without form and void. Perhaps ground was referring to the unformed chemical elements at the atomic level.
There is no indication of when this event occurred in Genesis 1:1, or how much time passed between this event and what is described in and after Genesis 1:2. According to the Bible. Time was not created until Genesis 1:14. If my postulation is correct that the planets and their controlling properties were all created at the same time and in position, then this event’s creation period could have taken an indescribable amount of time to fully manifest after God spoke it into existence.
Unlike the references to days in later verses, the creation of the universe has no frame of a time reference. Since creation seems to have started with energy that formed atoms, molecules, properties and so on, there must have been an enormous level of complexity in its formation. It just so happens that there are quantum physics equations that support the possibility that the duration of time it took to make the universe is different than the duration of time it took to create the earth.
Next up, we will explore our privileged planet earth.
